JAKARTA: Forest Interactive Indonesia’s Operations and Marketing Manager Vita Paulina recently spoke to the final year students at Binus University Bandung about career preparation. The virtual webinar was organized by the university.
Titled ‘How to Find the Perfect Mentor’, Vita encouraged the students to find a mentor that can guide them in preparing for their future careers. As cited from Parsloe (2016), Vita further explained that mentoring aims to support and encourage people to maximize their potential, develop their skills, improve their performance, and become the person they want to be.
“In mentoring, the one who leads the process will be called a mentor, and the participant is called a mentee,” said Vita. “When talking about mentoring, sometimes we will also come across the terms coach and coaching. The type of relationship between mentor and mentee is quite long-term, it can be informal, and the relationship is based on trust.”
“A mentor would pass on their experience and often has more years of experience. They focus on your career and personal development. Meanwhile, coaching is generally, a short discussion and is more time-based. The relationship tends to be short-term and focused on a particular development need. A coach does not need experience in the topic that they are supporting you on, and they focus on immediate, present goals,” added Vita.
Furthermore, students can also ask themselves a few questions before approaching someone to be a mentor:
- What is your personal or career development objective?
- How senior or experienced is your potential mentor?
- Is this someone who has overcome challenges that you’re likely to face?
- Is your mentor well-networked? Or, at the very least, willing to connect you to their existing network?
Towards the end of the webinar, Vita also shares three effective ways to get a mentor: “First of all, you need to talk to them straight to the point. You should tell your prospective mentor the reason why you think they are the right person to be your mentor. When you do it, please be clear on what you expect from the mentoring.”
“Then, you should offer your value and respect. Remember that mentoring is two ways interactions, hence you should show your potential mentor why being our mentor will be worth their time and effort. Lastly, the only thing you need is to take action. You do not want your relationship to go cold. One way to make your mentor feel appreciated is to turn their advice for you into action,” noted Vita.
In her closing remark, Vita mentioned that Forest Interactive has always valued mentorship —one of such efforts is through an internship program. She also shared that Forest Interactive Indonesia is looking for interns, including Graphic Designer and People Operations.
