JAKARTA: As part of its tradition in celebrating workplace diversity, Forest Interactive Indonesia ushers in Year of the Tiger with a virtual celebration for talents based in the country.
There were 37 talents from every department participating for the get-together. Two of the talents, Samuel Setiawan and Anastasia Suhandi, also shared how they would usually spend their Lunar New Year at home and some fun facts behind the scene.
Anastasia expressed her most precious moment during this time of the year was being able to gather with family and pray for one another for the prosperous year. She continued by sharing some of the must-eat dishes in Indonesia during the celebration, which include oranges, roasted duck or chicken, kue keranjang, and many more. Another one is layered cake, which represents well-being and synonym with “layers of fortune.”
Apart from the must-eat festive food during the day, she also shared the proper way to ask for the red packet (angpao) is by waiting for the elders to come and say “Gong Xi Gong Xi”, a common New Year greeting in Mandarin that is often used to express good wishes.
According to Anastasia, the good thing about being unmarried this time of the year is that you are still eligible to receive angpaos from the elder family members and relatives and, at the same time, do not have the obligation to hand out one to others.
Samuel, on the other hand, talked about the trivia related to Lunar New Year that has been adapted to the Indonesian culture. For instance, cici is originated from the Mandarin term jie jie that refers to an elder sister. Similarly, the use of the term gopek or cepek in money-related talk is also originated from Mandarin.
Sam concluded his session with an important message about inclusivity.
“Chinese in Indonesia is Indonesian. We may have different cultures, ethnicity backgrounds, and customs, but at the end of the day, we are one big family — Indonesian,” affirmed Sam.
To spice the event up, a quiz session was held to test and decide department with the best teamwork and understanding of the Lunar New Year. After a competitive session, People Operations was crowned champion with an unexpected twist.
“I am grateful for all the support I received during the virtual celebration. I could not be more thankful for the chance to be part of Forest Interactive Indonesia family — a place where I am celebrated as equal and not being viewed as “just an intern,” said Vada Dihati, Corporate Communications Intern, who is also the organizer for the virtual get-together.
