KUALA LUMPUR — Forest Interactive’s CEO, Johary Mustapha recently shared his thoughts on the need for a 360 digital approach for education at #MYDigitalMaker Fair 2020. The event was organized by The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) which was held virtually from October 5-11, this year.
The panel discussion was also joined by Hairul Faizal Izwan, Chief Operating Officer at Digital Durian, Sharala Axryd, CEO of Centre of Applied Data Science, and Alina Amir, Founder of Arus Academy as moderator.
“The fundamental approach of using the technology itself is the understanding of it,” said Johary. “Language, especially the English language, plays an important aspect in today’s generation, and how educating children with the right language will benefit them in the future. In order for one to understand technology, you first need to understand that most technological aspect is based in English. So, the first step in adopting technology into our lives is that you need a fair understanding of English, because if you don’t have one, how can we talk about technology today?”
In his closing remark, Johary also urged the tech companies and other businesses alike to come together and support the government’s initiatives to accelerate digital adoption and, eventually, bridge the gap in education.
“We’ve seen that the technology industry is moving fast and its innovations know no limitations. However, we can agree that digital adoption is still way behind and getting our society ‘on-board’ is quite challenging. Companies in private sectors play an important role in making sure that this paradigm shift on the fundamental model of our education system can be realized sooner. As for the educators, there’s also a need for a clear direction in the teaching and learning objectives and how technology can be a tool to achieve them. What good is a technological advancement if it’s not fully utilized by the most important figure in the education industry—the teachers?” concluded Johary.
Later that week, Johary also judged the annual Battle of the Digital Ninja, the finale of the annual competition for The Digital Ninja programme. This leadership and digital maker skills enhancement initiative, which supports Malaysia’s best and brightest young digital innovators from the age of 11 to 17, aims to solve a variety of global challenges.
Johary has always been an avid supporter of the Malaysian youth development and he believes that this is where the future of Malaysia’s digital economy can be found. His fervent belief in the youth has led to a long-lasting partnership with The Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) since 2016. Forest Interactive has also been working closely with MDEC to support the growth of the digital economy in the country. Through this collaboration between MDEC and Forest Interactive, Johary has helped thousands of future innovators to reach their future careers in tech.
