#BeReasonable : An Intern’s Journey Towards Sustainable Fashion

With New Year’s spring cleaning on everyone’s minds, we have become more aware than ever of the clothes we own. We are often left confused on what to do with clothes that no longer fit or have seen their fair share of wear and tear.

I decided to make sustainable fashion the focus of my passion project after a chat with my supervisor, Tassya Bainon, where I find myself wondering out loud,

“We have all these clothes that we don’t use — why don’t we pass it along to people in need who would appreciate it more?”.

I was also inspired by Marie Kondo’s popular saying,

“Only keep things that spark joy in your life”.

The conclusion was simple; if the piece of clothing doesn’t cheer you up anymore, it’s simply time to pass it on to others.

With the support of the Corporate PR department, I ran the #BeReasonable Clothing Donation Drive at Forest Interactive HQ, from 17th January to 11th February 2022. The campaign gave talents the opportunity to drop off their unwanted items and be part of a movement to give these items a new lease on life, whether it is to clothe a person in need or contribute towards other recycling efforts. The end goal was the same, to keep these unwanted fabrics and items out of our landfills.

Through our partnership with Kloth Cares, we were able to raise awareness on the 3R’s; Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – These three ‘R’s play an essential part in sustainable fashion because they help reduce the amount of waste we produce. Kloth Cares is a social entrepreneurship movement whose main purpose is to keep fabrics out of landfills. All 105kg of used items collected from our clothing donation drive were passed to Kloth Cares who will sort them into donations to the less fortunate or recyclables to be processed for other purposes.

“There’s a need to rethink the way we consume and dispose our clothes. Our actions today have a lasting impact on tomorrow’s future. Kloth Cares is on a mission to save 2,000,000 kg of clothing from entering the landfills each year, and we need your help. Let’s make a difference by being part of the solution,” shared Adelyn Ghwee from Kloth Cares.

Indeed, each year we know there is a natural impulse to start fresh, spring clean our homes and declutter our closets. We might not be getting much use out of that jumper, suit, jeans, or shoes, but someone else definitely will. With that being said, this campaign was just the start of greater and even more impactful efforts to come for Forest Interactive. I was encouraged and grateful to witness how a simple act of kindness can deliver joy, and happiness in the hearts of our talents to do more for our community, which was what made my experience with the #BeReasonable campaign special.

I would like to express my gratitude and appreciation to those who have been part of my passion project. Through your kind contributions, we will be able to cheer up many lives and continue working towards achieving the UN SDG 12, “Responsible Consumption and Production”.
