Priscilla Tjin on Communication Ethics in Workplace

JAKARTA: Forest Interactive Indonesia collaborated with Binus University for Binus Career Festival Seminar (BFest). The event was held to provide insights to students on the communication skills that they can utilize in a professional workplace. BFest was held on April 20-23, 2022, with more than 200 students participating.

A few industry experts were invited as guests to share different topics such as Communication Ethics, Public Speaking, and Applied Management Skills. Priscilla Tjin, Marketing and Business Development at Wallet Codes Indonesia, was present at BFest to share her knowledge and experience about Communication Ethics.

Priscilla stated that in the workplace, communication skill is important: “It is essential for  professionals to have communication skill. Communication ethics are there as a guide to help us communicate better with people from different backgrounds. That way, we will know how to act in different circumstances.”

Priscilla also stated that there are four key ethical communication principles: “Communication ethics is something that every communicator needs to have within themselves. There are four key ethical principles we should bear in mind such as ensuring transparency and honesty, understanding your audience, respecting confidentiality and privacy, and last but not least, is to choose the right time and place,” continued Priscilla.

Priscilla also shared a case study for the audience to communicate with different audiences. The ethics that we needed to have could be different according to the audience.

“The ethics when we are communicating with clients, manager, or colleague are different. The approach that we needed to take could also be different,” added Priscilla.

According to Priscilla, here are a few examples of how to communicate with different audiences:-

1. Communicating with clients

When communicating with clients through email, always start your email with greetings. After that, you can proceed with introducing yourself and where did you get their contacts from. Then, you can state your purpose in the email body. If you are planning to have a meeting with your clients, you can also suggest a time and place to have a meeting. Lastly, be sure to conclude your email with a professional sign off such as Regards, Sincerely, etc.

2. Communicating with managers

Always greet them with a hello and a smile to start things off. After that, you can start asking whether they have the time to have a conversation or not. A manager might not always have the time to have an impromptu conversation. That is why you need to schedule it first. When you have a conversation, speak straight to the point with your manager. That way, your manager can understand you better. At the end of your conversation, don’t forget to say thank you for their time.

3. Communicating with colleagues

You can approach your colleagues casually by starting the conversation with small talk. You can ask them about how they are or how their day is going, etc. That way, you can have a better connection with your colleagues. After that, if you have something important to inform, state straight to the point. Be sure to say thank you when you finish your conversation

Priscilla ended her presentation with question and answer session. Forest Interactive hopes that the students have a better understanding about communication ethics in workplace. Forest Interactive aspires to keep on sharing positive impacts through program partnerships and collaborations with educational institutions such as Binus Career Festival Seminar.
