The annual La Salle Computer Society event aims to introduce high school students to informatics and computing through a series of short talks and a culminating case competition.

MANILA: Wallet Codes Philippines, a gaming wallet and digital voucher platform by Forest Interactive, affirms its commitment to tech education and the local gaming community, following its platinum sponsorship of De La Salle University’s (DLSU) SPARK 2021.

Organized by the La Salle Computer Society, the three-day event that ran on July, 16, 17, and 31 aimed to offer local high school students early exposure to the available courses at DLSU’s College of Computer Studies.

“De La Salle University has been at the forefront of revolutionizing Computer Science and IT education and bridging relevant information to real-life experiences,” said Don Vicente, Marketing & Business Development Lead at Forest Interactive Philippines; he is also in charge of Wallet Codes’ operations in the country. “With SPARK as an avenue, this one-of-a-kind experience can not only encourage aspiring students of Computer Science or IT but also show how they can enjoy these courses in university.”

Students were given access to various workshops and short talks, covering areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, business intelligence, and game development. On the last day of the event, students were challenged to think creatively through a “Hackathon Case Competition” ideathon.

Don Vicente is one of the panel judges for the ideathon held on the last day of DLSU’s SPARK 2021.

“Ideas presented by the participants were outstanding. Some students also presented very feasible and creative concepts. The school that won the first place proposed an application for aquaculture businesses and consumers, which caters to the United Nation’s Sustainability Development Goals 9 (Industry, Innovation, Infrastructure) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption & Production),” commented Vicente, who was also one of the panel judges for the ideathon.

The sponsorship underscores Wallet Codes Philippines’ continuous efforts to raise awareness of the career opportunities available for students in the gaming and esports industries.

Wallet Codes sponsored a total of PHP 5,000 in P Points, its loyalty points, for the event. The accumulated P Points can be used to purchase vouchers and gift cards on the platform.

First launched in the Philippines in 2017, Wallet Codes is a one-stop portal for digital goods that offers a wide range of digital gaming vouchers and gift cards from prominent titles such as PUBG Mobile, Mobile Legends Diamond, STEAM Wallet, PlayStation, Garena Shells, Roblox, and Google Play.

According to market researcher Newzoo, the Philippines gaming industry consists of 43 million gamers who have spent $572 million on games last year, making it the world’s 25th biggest market by game revenues, and a key driver of Southeast Asia’s overall games market.

Earlier this year, Wallet Codes Philippines committed to another similar effort in Manilla, co-sponsoring an esports tournament and charity event called “All TAMS Deployed! The Battle eSPEDcially for You” for three days from May 6 to May 8, 2021. Wallet Codes sponsored a total of PHP 5,000 worth of P Points, with PHP 2,500 dedicated for Garena Shells and PHP 2,500 for the Mobile Legends Diamonds, respectively.

“All TAMS Deployed! The Battle eSPEDcially for You” was organized by FEU’s Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management for three days, from May 6 to May 8, 2021.

Themed “Fostering Camaraderie in shaping a better future for the Youth,” the event was organized by the Far Eastern University (FEU)’s Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management to address the basic needs of the community and to gather FEU gaming enthusiasts under one roof to fulfill their course requirements.

“In this difficult time, we need to help each other. Through community or campus events such as this, especially for a cause, we get to empower other people to show support,” Vicente said on FEU’s esports tournament.

“One way that is relevant and prevalent among students and youth is gaming and esports. Wallet Codes has been at the forefront of supporting the gaming community through healthy esports tournaments and events,” Vicente concluded.
