There are still many areas that mobile operators could cover in regards to the eSIM market. Throughout the pandemic, the smartphone market is seeing a short-term slowdown in smartphone replacement rate. However, almost all smartphone vendors have already launched eSIM smartphones by 2021 which will help push the longer term of eSIM on smartphone adoption.
The momentum of eSIM in the consumer market is accelerating. Though consumer awareness for the new technology is still very low, this could be the opportunity for mobile operators to help build awareness and lead the market with a good marketing campaign.
By the end of 2020, the number of eSIM devices commercially available for purchase has reached 110 models across smartphones, laptops, smartwatches, and tablets. According to GSMA Intelligence in their latest report, the eSIM market outlook by 2025 will be led by Asia – mostly China and India – which will help shape the eSIM market in the long term.
