In 2020, GSMA Intelligence did a survey about the progress of the eSIM market across 17 countries. On average, only 20% of survey takers are aware of eSIM technology. Despite the technology growing 3 times between 2018 to 2020, the adoption of this technology is still slow in the market. There are many reasons for this slow adoption and one of them is an awareness gap.
There are at least 175 mobile service providers that launched commercial eSIM for smartphones across 69 countries which are mostly available in developed markets. The top three countries that have the most awareness in the percentage of mobile subscribers (26%) are Italy, Poland, and South Korea. Apart from that, eSIM consumer awareness is mostly Apple users that age between 25-34 year old. In the research, it’s mentioned that there’s no visible or strong correlation between the rate of eSIM adoption in the market and the marketing or socialization efforts of the technology.
By 2025, 90% of the operators taking the survey plan to offer eSIM services. The optimistic momentum for the technology to accelerate is said to be by 2021, but more believe it will happen in 2022-2023.
