Apart from watching movies and/or series online, the other go-to-entertainment during this year of global lockdown is gaming. This thriving industry is said to have approximately 2.5 billion gamers worldwide in 2020 alone. From casual free-to-play games to subscription-based games, the industry is currently valued at approximately $63.6 billion according to Newzoo.
There are many ways for individuals to access their games, namely through mobile phones, PC, and gaming consoles. Interestingly, players utilizing mobile phones dominated the charts, with those who are more interested in free-to-play games at 64%. This is opposed to console players, whom 80% pay for games. This resulted in low average revenue per user (ARPU) for mobile gaming though active players remained high.
In 2021, the gaming industry will continue to grow. It is suggested that mobile operators should seek opportunities in the industry by creating bundles through partnerships. Other than that, good investments in 5G would be helpful as it will boost the gaming experience with its low latency and high-speed connections.
