JAKARTA – Wallet Codes, a gaming e-vouchers platform by Forest Interactive, continues to make headlines by formally signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indonesian Video Games Association (AVGI). The MoU marks the beginning of a partnership between Wallet Codes and AVGI to support the sustainability of SMEs, especially those operating esports Internet cafés.
Despite the significant rise in the global adoption of esports, the Internet café operators in Indonesia have been greatly impacted by the current global health crisis due to the sudden halt in their business operations. Since the enforcement of the large-scale social restrictions (PSBB) policy, Internet cafés have been ordered to close, and there is no further confirmation yet the resumption of their operations.
“Internet café operators play an important role in the esports ecosystem,” said Sharon Maurenn, Co-Founder & Director of Wallet Codes Indonesia. “Internet cafés have contributed to building and developing the esports community in the region, and this is Wallet Codes’ way of giving back. We are fully committed to supporting these operators in regaining their momentum during this time through revenue sharing of Wallet Codes’ products. We hope that they can optimize their branding efforts, build a competitive community, entice new esports consumers, and maintain customer loyalty through this initiative.”
Sharon viewed that the esports community can grow further through this partnership, as esports internet cafés also serve as a training ground for young esports athletes, where they hone in on their analytical thinking and mental endurance before joining a bigger team.
Meanwhile, Angki Trijaka, Secretary General of AVGI, welcomed the collaboration between Wallet Codes and the association. Angki Trijaka noted that “a collaboration between corporations, associations, and the government is needed to develop the video gaming industry. One way to do this is through the expansion of the gaming e-voucher business and its potential market in Indonesia, which has, so far, been forgotten.”
This partnership has also received a note of appreciation from the Ministry of Communications and Informatics of Indonesia. “Even though the government only acts as a facilitator and an accelerator, it is one of our goals to develop this industry more rapidly,” said Widodo. “One of the efforts that has been done is the issuance of Ministerial Regulation No. 11 of 2016 about the General Classification of Electronic Interactive Games.”
In an effort to support the Internet café SMEs, Widodo suggested that AVGI provides recommendations to the government when the operators are ready and fit to resume their operations. As the world is now slowly recovering from the crisis, the government has to take the necessary precautions and act wisely. “The government will consider various parameters, such as field data. With the provided recommendations, the government would be able to do a smooth evaluation,” clarified Widodo, who is also a coordinator of the National COVID-19 Task Force’s communication team in Indonesia.
